James Gray will direct the two Oscar favorites

Joaquin Phoenix is set to reunite with his "We Own the Night" and "The Yards" director James Gray on "Two Lovers."

Gwyneth Paltrow is in final negotiations to join him in the two-hander.

According to Variety, "Two Lovers" focuses on a Brooklyn man destined to marry a family friend until a beautiful, but volatile, new woman moves in next door and stirs everything up. It's unclear whether Paltrow will be playing the stable first woman or the new lady in town.

Gray wrote the film with Ric Menello.

Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban of 2929 Productions will finance, as they did on Gray's "We Own the Night," which Columbia will release on Oct. 12.

In addition to "We Own the Night," two-time Oscar nominee Phoenix has "Reservation Road" coming out this fall.

Paltrow, an Oscar winner for "Shakespeare in Love," was last seen in "Infamous" and "Running with Scissors." Best known for more indie material, Paltrow will get a wider platform next summer when she co-stars in Marvel's "Iron Man."
