Samuel L. Jackson Furious Over Nick Fury
Says role may be cut or recast for 'Iron Man 2'
Samuel L. Jackson says he may not reprise his role as superspy Nick Fury in the sequel to " Iron Man."Though Jackson appeared in the role during a cameo in the first film, he told the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blog "there seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world."
"I saw ['Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2' director] Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation," Jackson told the Times. "He said, 'I hope things are working out for you because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren't really working that well."
Jackson has a vested interest in the role: While Fury has traditionally been white, the Ultimates series of Marvel comic books used Jackson's face and physique -- with his permission -- as the model for the head of U.S. covert operations. That led to his "Iron Man" cameo as well as planned appearances in "Iron Man 2," "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "The Avengers." (Jackson did not appear in " The Incredible Hulk," but Robert Downey Jr. reprised his Tony Stark role in a similar cameo.)
However, the Times blog reports Marvel contacts said they still hope to see Jackson as Fury, but "would not comment on active negotiations" (emphasis via the Times).
