'Buffy' star gravitates toward South Korean remake

Some actors attempt to avoid typecasting, but Sarah Michelle Gellar just can't say no to a good supernatural thriller.

Gellar is expected to topline "Addicted," a remake of the 2002 South Korean film "Jungdok." The project will be financed by the Yari Film Group, Vertigo and Spitfire.

The industry trades are actually split as to whether or not "Addicted" has supernatural elements, with Variety using the s-word, but The Hollywood Reporter preferring to stick with the modifier "Hitchcockian."

The plot focuses on a woman (Gellar, we guess), whose husband and brother-in-law both go into comas after a serious accident. The brother-in-law wakes up and claims that he was the one married to her, which just makes things confusing on so many levels, particularly since he knows things only her husband could know.

The script was written by Michael Petroni and will be directed by the Swedish duo of Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist.

If it "Addicted" -- described as only a loose adaptation of the Korean original -- turns out to include those supernatural elements, Gellar won't bat an eyelash. From "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to "Scooby-Doo" to "The Grudge" to the upcoming "The Return," the 29-year-old actress has spent much of her career fighting the forces of darkness. She'll go into slightly different territory for the completed "The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing," as well as "Southland Tales," which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
