'How I Met Your Mother' star Jason Segel will write the project with Nick Stoller

Disney has recruited writer-actor Jason Segel and writer-director Nick Stoller to work on the studio's new Muppets movie.

Segel, one of the stars of CBS' "How I Met Your Mother," wrote and stars in the upcoming Universal comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," which was directed by Stoller.

The duo recently signed to reteam with "Forgetting" producer Judd Apatow on the comedy "Five-Year Engagement."

According to Variety, Segel's "Sarah Marshall" character writes a "Dracula" musical in which the puppets were produced by the Henson workshop. The actor then pitched his vision for a new Muppet feature -- the trade paper has no specific details -- to studio execs and was immediately hired.

Segel will write the Muppet project with Stoller, who will also direct.

Beyond occasional off-brand cameos -- and unauthorized appearances like the legendary Sad Kermit -- the Muppets were most recently seen in the telefilm "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz." Their big screen credits include "Muppets from Space," "The Muppets Take Manhattan," "The Great Muppet Caper" and 1979's "The Muppet Movie."
