'Speed Racer' Also Crashes Overseas
'Iron Man' still leads, with 'What Happens in Vegas' finishing second
The weekend's foreign box office standings were nearly identical to the domestic results. "Iron Man," with 7,500 foreign playdates (as Variety cryptically likes to say), took in $39 million.
The trade paper attributes the 60 percent "Iron Man" drop to sunny weather across Europe, though the Marvel release's $165 foreign cum brings its worldwide total to a strong $342 million.
Second place went to the premiere of the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas," which performed particularly well in Spain and Russia and earned $23 million in 3,902 foreign playdates.
While early estimates had "Speed Racer" finishing slightly ahead of "Vegas" domestically, the Wachowski Brothers' disappointing update of the anime classic did only $12.8 million in foreign markets, despite 3,940 playdates. Foreign results were always expected to be the "Speed Racer" salvation, but a June launch in Australia and a July 5 bow in Japan will likely be the film's last hope.
With "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" only premiering day-and-date in a dozen foreign markets, next weekend is also expected to go to "Iron Man," a last gasp before "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" sweeps across the globe.
