DreamWorks eyes Park Chan-wook revenge drama

Fans of the cult Korean classic "Oldboy" may be surprised to see which A-listers are circling the English language remake.

According to Variety, Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions -- not to be confused with "negotiations" or even "talks" -- to collaborate on the revenge drama. The trade paper says that DreamWorks is in the process of getting the remake rights for the 2003 Park Chan-wook film.

In the original "Oldboy," a man is kept in a cell for 15 years. He doesn't know who's holding him or why, nor does he know why he's suddenly released. All he knows is that he's out for revenge.

Smith would presumably play the lead role in the remake.

A fanboy favorite in the States, the "Oldboy" remake has been circling in development hell for several years. Among the filmmakers attached to the project were Justin Lin ("Better Luck Tomorrow").

Spielberg has been coy about selecting his next directing effort, following up on "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." "Tintin" and a long-coming Abraham Lincoln biopic have been on his plate for a while.

Last seen in "Hancock," Smith has the drama "Seven Pounds" opening this winter.
