Paramount fast-tracks science fiction franchise

The reboot of Paramount's "Star Trek" series is moving at warp speed.

The studio has already contracted "Lost's" Damon Lindelof, plus "Star Trek" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, to begin work on a sequel, according to Variety.

"There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," Lindelof said in a statement. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

"Star Trek" beams into theaters May 8. The movie revisits the early days of Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the crew of the "Enterprise" for an early adventure. Thanks to the movie's future-changing foray into time travel, additional film installments could be made without being confined to the storylines of the original movies.
