New Kirk may take up superhero mantle

Chris Pine may go from savior of the galaxy to... savior of the galaxy.

Pine, who stars as a young James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," is rumored to be Warner Bros.' choice to play superhero Green Lantern, according to movie news site IESB.net. Though the report is couched as layers of rumors, Pine's star has been rising due to his involvement in "Trek."

Though several DC Comics characters have taken on the Green Lantern name, the movie will focus on test pilot Hal Jordan, the first human to take up the ring. No plot details have been released, but the story would presumably focus on Jordan's early days as a superhero. After finding a dying alien, Jordan is invited to join the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic group of peacekeepers. His ring can manifest a green (of course) version of anything Jordan can imagine, though its powers are useless against anything colored yellow.

Pine, 28, also starred in 2008's "Bottle Shock."
