IMAX Records Aren't Kryptonite for 'Superman'
Are IMAX records bigger and do 3D records just jump out at you?
While "Superman Returns" has set no overall box office records in its short theatrical flight, the Warner Bros. release pretty much destroyed every available IMAX mark for its first seven days. The "Superman Returns: An IMAX 3D Experience" release took in $6.83 million in its first week. That was only the smallest percentage of the $108 million week for "Superman Returns," but it still toppled all records for an IMAX Hollywood simultaneous release.
The previous recordholder appears to have been "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," information that the IMAX press release wasn't helpful enough to provide. But who can blame them for not providing sufficient information when the film also averaged $89,804 per screen, another record.
Since Warner Bros. is really the studio that has gone after the IMAX market the hardest, it's no wonder that Warner Bros. films keep breaking each others' records. "Harry Potter," for example, broke records set by "Batman Begins," which out-performed "The Matrix Reloaded."
"We are thrilled with the initial success of Superman Returns in both conventional theatres and IMAX theatres," says Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. "The special IMAX 3D release has been well received by moviegoers across the country, and will continue to play to sell-out crowds."
The gushing continues.
"Through the amazing execution of Bryan Singer's vision and our partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, IMAX has transported audiences directly into the adventure of Superman," says Greg Foster, chairman and president, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Audiences literally reach out to touch Superman as he flies toward them in the IMAX 3D sequences, and this unique offering is translating into unprecedented box office results for IMAX."
Stay tuned for addition "Superman Returns" IMAX records in the weeks to come.
