Remakes of '80s movies in the works

Studios are again mining the 1980s for a new batch of high-profile releases.

Fox has moved a remake of the 1984 adventure "Romancing the Stone" to development. Universal, meanwhile, is in negotations to get the rights to John Carpenter's 1988 sci-fi film "The Live," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Romancing the Stone" followed novelist Kathleen Turner and mercenary Michael Douglas (plus comic-relief villain Danny DeVito) on a South American romp in pursuit of a hidden treasure and Turner's sister. As the name indicates, Turner and Douglas fall in love. "Romancing" was followed in 1985 by "The Jewel of the Nile."

"They Live," meanwhile, was a black comedy about the conservative rise of the 1980s: Former wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper played Nada, a construction worker who discovers sunglasses that reveal aliens behind the decade's hyper-materialism.

Daniel McDermott, writer of "Eagle Eye" and a remake of "Soylent Green," has been tapped to write "Romancing the Stone." No other talent has yet been attached to either remake, nor is there word whether the original stars might return.
