'Venom' movie snares writers
'Spider-Man' spinoff will focus on popular villain
Sources say writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, late of the upcoming horror/comedy "Zombieland," have been hired by Sony to write a movie centered on Marvel Comics villain Venom. As portrayed in "Spider-Man 3," Venom is a dark version of Spider-Man created by the symbiosis of an alien life form and a human host (in this case, rival writer Eddie Brock).
No word on a plot, or whether the stars of the first three "Spider-Man" films will appear.
The character has Spider-Man's powers (web shooters, enhanced agility and strength) but also sports a mouth full of pointy teeth and, well, a prehensile tongue. At one point, Venom rivaled Wolverine in comic-book popularity, though the latter has been more popular with film audiences.
A fourth "Spider-Man" film is also in the works.
