The 21-year-old wants to break from his musical roots

Zac Efron is so tired of being the young song-and-dance heartthrob, he's reportedly backed out of the highly anticipated remake of "Footloose."

Although Efron, 21, had been signed on for the Paramount film, he used his script approval as a loophole to get out of his contract when a rewrite proved not to be up to snuff, a source tells TheWrap.com.

"'Footloose' is a project we've longed to see rebooted for a new generation," says the studio in a statement. "While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of Kenny Ortega, Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise. Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we've come to expect from them."

Thus far, Efron has performed in the first "High School Musical" movies, the last of which hit the big screens, the reboot of "Hairspray" and even did a musical number with Vanessa Hudgens for the latest Academy Awards tribute to the return of musicals to film.

In the lead-footed, non-musical genre, Efron has appeared as a guest star for various TV dramas, in the short-lived "Summerland," the to-be-released Richard Linklater film "Me and Orson Welles" with Claire Danes and the comedy "17 Again," which hits theaters on Friday, April 17.
