"The Departed" and "Dreamgirls" were named best drama and best musical/comedy at Sunday (Dec. 17) night's Satellite Awards.
Presented by the International Press Academy, rogue separatists from those wacky Golden Globes presenters at the Hollywood Foreign Press, the 11th annual Satellite Awards mostly went to the usual string of Oscar favorites.
In addition to its musical/comedy picture win, "Dreamgirls" also saw Bill Condon split the best directing honors with "Flags of our Fathers" helmer Clint Eastwood. "Dreamgirls" got other wins for supporting actress Jennifer Hudson and for sound.
"The Departed," meanwhile, was also toasted for William Monahan's adapted screenplay, for best ensemble and for Leonardo DiCaprio in the supporting actor category (he's being pushed as lead actor for most awards).
According to media reports, the Satellites for best dramatic actor and actress went to Oscar frontrunners Helen Mirren of "The Queen" and Forest Whitaker of "The Last King of Scotland." On the comedy acting side, Meryl Streep ("The Devil Wears Prada") and Joseph Cross ("Running with Scissors") were the winners.
