Scripted by Scot Armstrong, the fictional tale is set around the final days of the American Basketball Association. Ferrell will play Jackie Moon, the owner-player-coach of the Flint Tropics. Benjamin plays the team's star player, with Woody Harrelson already committed as another player.
According to the industry trade papers, "Semi-Pro" has been fast-tracked by New Line and should be ready to shoot early next year. The '70s-set comedy will be directed by Kent Alterman.
Benjamin, one half of the Grammy-winning Outkast, will do "Semi-Pro" after he completes work on the political drama "The Battle in Seattle." One of the voices in the upcoming "Charlotte's Web," Benjamin's other big screen acting credits include "Idlewild" and "Four Brothers."
