Rose Byrne will play a young woman trying to prevent the apocalypse

Golden Globe nominee Rose Byrne has landed the female lead opposite Nicolas Cage in the sci-fi thriller "Knowing."

Directed by "Dark City" and "I, Robot" helmer Alex Proyas, "Knowing" focuses on a professor (Cage) who discovers that a time capsule buried in 1962 has information correctly predicting a number of world events and also speculating on an impending apocalypse.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne will play the daughter of the woman who buried the original time capsule, who gets sucked into the professor's paranoid concerns.

The trade says that the original screenplay was written by Ryne Douglas Pearson and then redrafted by Juliet Snowden, Stiles White, Stuart Hazeldine and Proyas.

Summit Entertainment is financing and distributing the film, which will begin production on March 25 in Australia.

Byrne had a break-out 2007 with big screen turns in "Sunshine" and "28 Weeks Later" and her lead role as lawyer/murder suspect in FX's "Damages." Her other credits include "Troy" and "Wicker Park."
