'Arrested Development' star would play Bryan Lee O'Malley's slacker hero

Fans of Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series probably didn't picture Michael Cera in the lead role, but the "Superbad" star is close to toplining the Universal adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz") is directing "Scott Pilgrim's Little Life" and also producing with Nina Park, Marc Platt and Eric Gitter.

Wright also wrote the script with Michael Bacall.

Published by Oni Press, "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life" introduced readers to Scott Pilgrim, a directionless 23-year-old Canadian slacker, plus his gay best friend and roommate, his sister, the members of his band and his 17-year-old girlfriend Knives Chau. In the first book, Scott meets Ramona Flowers, an American delivery girl with an interesting romantic past. In order to fully win Ramona's heart, Scott has to fight her seven evil exes, who have a variety of fighting skills and, occasionally super-powers. It's a romantic comedy with a video game/action twist.

The fourth book in the series, "Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together," was published last year.

It's unclear how many of O'Malley's books will serve as the basis for the feature, which Universal hopes to begin shooting in the fall.

Cera, whose credits include "Juno" and "Arrested Development," is currently shooting "Year One" with Jack Black. He'll then transition into the Miguel Arteta-directed "Youth in Revolt."
