Saget's 'Farce' Goes Straight to DVD
No theatrical release for R-rated penguin comedy
Rather than going head-to-head with the fall theatrical release of the animated opus "Happy Feet," the raunchy penguin parody will shuffle off to DVD immediately, hitting shelves on January 30, 2007.
Originally announced last November, "Farce of the Penguins" was devised as an R-rated answer to "March of the Penguins," focusing on horny flightless birds looking to mate. Saget wrote, directed and produced the project, which was expected, at one point, to get a theatrical release this spring. By the summer of 2006, though, vocal casting was still ongoing.
Whatever problems "Farce of the Penguins" may have had -- there have been rumors of production delays on the still-unfinished film -- the project doesn't lack for star-power. The vocal cast includes Saget, Christina Applegate, Lewis Black, Mo'Nique, Tracy Morgan, Jason Alexander, Jason Biggs, Dane Cook, Gilbert Gottfried, Damon Wayans, Norm MacDonald, Jamie Kennedy, Jon Lovitz, Dave Coulier, John Stamos and, best of all, Abe Vigoda.
Actually, for non-Vigoda fans, the film's vocal highlight may be the narration by Samuel Jackson, a nod to Morgan Freeman's "March of the Penguins" voice-over.
