Green will direct Rogen and Franco

Frequent collaborators Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow will join forces again on "The Pineapple Express," a comedy set up at Columbia Pictures.

In an unusual twist, the film will be directed by indie helmer David Gordon Green.

According to Variety, Apatow will produce "The Pineapple Express" with Shauna Robertson. Rogen, who wrote the script with Evan Goldberg, will star opposite James Franco.

Production will begin early next year on the comedy, which focuses on two stoners who get involved with a drug gang. The trade offers little additional insight into the plot, but we presume that some measure of hilarity will ensue.

While Rogen and Apatow have worked together since their TV days on "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" and on features including "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and the upcoming "Knocked Up," Green is a bit of a wild card addition to the mix.

The 31-year-old director's feature credits have all been critically adored, underseen indies such as "George Washington," "All the Real Girls" and "Undertow."
