The actor and his actress sister Maggie Gyllenhaal had to flee Manka's Inverness Lodge in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday, Dec. 27, reports People.
Apparently a tree had fallen and hit the water heater in the back of the building, after which the two-story wooden inn to catch fire around 2:30 a.m.
"It was during a very high windstorm and a tree came down," says Inverness Fire Dept. spokesperson Kaaren Gann. "The cause of the actual fire has not been determined at this point, but it totally destroyed the lodge."
Although eight people were believed to have been upstairs when the fire first broke out, everyone escaped unscathed. Jake Gyllenhaal also lent a hand to salvage as much as possible, pulling things out of the fire.
