If Josh Hartnett thought it was tough to go without sex for "40 Days and 40 Nights," wait til he has to cope with vampires for "30 Days of Night."

According to the industry trade papers, the "Lucky Number Slevin" star is in negotiations to take the lead role in Sony's adaptation of the comic "30 Days of Night."

Written and directed by the "Hard Candy" team of David Slade and Brian Nelson, "30 Days of Night" comes from the comic by Steve Niles. It's the story of a small town in Alaska that comes under attack by a group of vampires at the most inopportune of times -- just as the city is preparing for a month of total darkness.

At the center of the story are a husband-and-wife sheriff team with a very difficult decision to make, what with the vampires and all. Hartnett would play the husband.

Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are producing "30 Days" for their Ghost House shingle.

Upcoming films for "Wicker Park" star Hartnett include "The Black Dahlia" and "Resurrecting the Champ," as well as the indie "Mozart and the Whale."
