Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter Pack For 'Wonderland'
Actresses join Johnny Depp in Tim Burton feature
The Disney-based production will be shot in a mixture of live action and performance capture animation, featuring Mia Wasikowska, as Alice, a young girl whose journey down a rabbit-hole proves magical and scary.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hathaway will play the White Queen, while Carter will play the Red Queen.
Burton appears to be taking at least some liberties with the original Lewis Carroll classic, since both the Red and White Queens are characters found in the chess-centric "Through the Looking-Glass," rather than in the cards-centric "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
The HR story offers additional confusion by claiming that the Red Queen "has an affinity for crying out, 'Off with their heads!'" Fans of Carroll's books will know that it's actually the Queen of Hearts who revels in beheading. Whether the film's script has combined the two characters or the trade paper's reporting is sloppy remains to be seen.
Burton's frequent collaborator both on-screen and off, Carter will reunite with Johnny Depp, who will play the Mad Hatter in "Alice." The two have appeared together in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Sweeney Todd" and been heard together in "Corpse Bride."
Hathaway is currently enjoying strong buzz for her work in "Rachel Getting Married." The "Princess Diaries" star will next be seen in the fall thriller "Passengers."
