Lionsgate Lands Crowe, Bale Western
Production stars this fall
Now, according to the industry trade papers, Lionsgate has stepped up to distribute the Relativity Media-produced "Yuma." The $70-80 million-budgeted project marks a big increase in scare for the indie studio.
Delmer Daves directed the 1957 original, which starred Van Helfin as a rancher entrusted with transporting an outlaw (Glenn Ford) to a railway station to catch a train to Yuma. Crowe will play the outlaw, with Bale stepping into the Heflin part. The cast has also added "Serenity" co-star Alan Tudyk.
The "Yuma" remake was originally set up at Sony, spending several years in that inhospitable place known as development hell. Earlier this year, "Yuma" got a temporary momentum boost when it was rumored that Tom Cruise was interested and when Eric Bana showed interest. Neither deal closed and "Yuma" was in turnaround by June.
Mangold ("Walk the Line") will begin shooting next month.
