May direct film adaptation of controversial play

After more than a century, "Spring Awakening" may finally dawn on movie theaters.

The play, originally written in 1891, is under consideration by prolific director McG, according to multiple sources. Certainly the controversial storyline -- students on holiday explore their sexuality -- would appeal to the director, as would the show's successful musical run.

If McG does sign on, he'd also take the role of producer.

"Spring Awakening" closed on Broadway earlier this year, but got an additional boost when one of "90210's" storylines centered on West Beverly Hills High's production under former student Brenda (Shannen Doherty).

McG's next project, "Terminator: Salvation," explodes into theaters on May 21.
