'Terminator 3' Director Tackles 'Sub-Mariner'

Take that, 'Aquaman' movie

Jonathan Mostow has come on board to tackle the classic Marvel property "Sub-Mariner," writing and directing the comic adaptation.

Sub-Mariner first appeared in a 1939 issue of Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly and made his first "modern" appearance in an early Fantastic Four comic. The character's real identity is Prince Namor, the half-human/half-amphibian monarch of Atlantis. Gifted with incredible strength and the ability to control a variety of aquatic life.

While Sub-Mariner has acted as a pure hero, working with The Defenders among other superhero groups, his relationship with humans has been conflicted thanks to the damage caused by land-dwellers to the ocean. The water-surface conflict will reportedly be a central part of the upcoming feature.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Sub-Mariner" project is set up at Universal Pictures, with Kevin Misher producing for Marvel Studios.

Other talent associated with previous incarnations of the project have included writer David Self and director-producer Chris Columbus.

Mostow's directing credits include "U-571" and "Breakdown." He hasn't directed a film since 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."
