Romantic comedy vet will show thriller chops

"Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker is about to make a dramatic u-turn, starring in "Vacancy," a thriller set up at Screen Gems.

According to Variety, the script, by Mark L. Smith, focuses on a couple (Parker will play the wife, we reckon) stranded at an isolated hotel. What they don't know, at least at first, is that there are video cameras in their room and that they're about to become the stars of a snuff film.

Hal Lieberman ("Around the World in 80 Days") is producing through his Sony-based shingle.

"Vacancy" may be in production as early as this fall.

Before being crowned romantic comedy's television queen during her Emmy-winning run on "Sex," Parker had a scattering of full-on dramatic parts including "Striking Distance." Her most recent screen credits include a Golden Globe nominated turn in "The Family Stone" and a lead in the spring hit "Failure to Launch."
