Kids and Adults High on 'Halloweentown'
Movie's debut was most-watched program on basic cable that night
The film about the college adventures of teen witch Marnie Piper (Sara Paxton) drew in 7.5 million total viewers, making it the most-watched basic cable program for Friday, Oct. 20.
The kiddies tuned in as well: 3.2 million kids aged 6-11 and 2.9 mil for the 9-14 tween demo. These pre-pubescent numbers combined made it the most watched show in those demos across both broadcast and cable programs for the day. The network was also the most-watched on basic cable for the entire day in total viewers (2.1 million).
Naturally, little girls brought Disney Channel the big numbers as well, a 52 share for girls 6-11 and 50 share for tween girls.
The movie also had a good turn-out with adults, making it the Disney Channel's most-watched original movie ever with adults 18-34 (1 million) and adults 18-49 (1.9 million).
Overall, Disney Channel's 66th original movie, drew the network's fourth-highest number of total viewers following "The Cheetah Girls 2" (7.82 million), "High School Musical" (7.76 million) and 2002's "Cadet Kelly" (7.75 million).
"Return to Halloweentown" stars Paxton in her first foray as Marnie Piper after Kimberly J. Brown played the role for the first three films. Returning players include Debbie Reynolds, Judith Hoag, J. Paul Zimmerman and Lucas Grabeel.
