O'Neal Arrested for Assaulting Son
Actor fired a handgun during family dispute
The Oscar nominee was allegedly assaulted his adult son Griffin with a handgun during a family tiff in the wee hours of Saturday (Feb. 3), according to published reports.
The elder O'Neal, 65, was booked on charges assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was released after spending five hours in custody and paying $50,000 bail.
It's not entirely clear what happened, but at least one shot was fired and the son's girlfriend was injured, although not from the gun. Ryan O'Neal's publicist released the following statement:
"It is unfortunate that what should have been an internal family disagreement was escalated to the point that Ryan felt he had to defend himself from Griffin's aggressive, extremely menacing physical behavior, [wildly swinging a fireplace poker], in the way he did. The injury to Griffin's girlfriend was caused by Griffin himself and not Ryan, as has been alleged by Griffin. Of late, Ryan has extended himself so far as to insure the young lady, and her unborn child.
As this is now an open case, Ryan cannot comment any further, but certainly believes he will be completely vindicated after a thorough investigation."
Father and son have had a thorny relationship, and Griffin has had problems with drug abuse and the law.
Ryan O'Neal received an Oscar nomination for his role in the four-hankerchief movie "Love Story." His film credits also include "Barry Lyndon" and "Paper Moon," for which his daughter Tatum O'Neal won a best supporting actress Oscar at age 10.
On the small screen, he recently made appearances on "Desperate Housewives" and Bones." He's also known for "Miss Match" and "Bull."
