Jon Chu may return to direct another installment

Disney is prepping a third installment in the "Step Up" franchise, this one aiming to hit theaters in 3-D.

According to Variety, the film could be creatively titled "Step Up 3-D" and could feature the return of director Jon Chu, who ushered "Step Up 2 the Streets" to box office gold this spring.

Also expected to return are producers Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot of Offspring Entertainment, who produced both of the first two "Step Up" films. Offspring just extended its production deal with Disney through 2011.

The trade paper has no information on the writer/script for "Step Up 3-D," nor a proposed release date.

Working of a budget estimated in the $20 million range, "Step Up 2 the Streets" had a $28.7 million President's Day weekend premiere and has passed $41 million overall. The 2006 original made more than $65 million domestic and $110 million worldwide.
