We're already depressed in anticipation
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the young actress will also produce the project with Plum Pictures in association with Killer Films.
Originally published in 1963 under the name Victoria Lucas, "The Bell Jar" is the story of a young woman whose life descends into increased degrees of mental illness in the aftermath of a prominent magazine internship. The protagonist, based heavily on Plath, spends time in an institution and makes multiple suicide attempts.
Tristine Skyler is adapting the book, which has attracted many an ingenue in the past. The only previous adaptation of the book came out in 1979 and starred Marilyn Hassett, though Gwyneth Paltrow played Plath in the 2003 biopic "Sylvia."
The hope is to have "The Bell Jar" in front of cameras in early 2008.
Stiles, whose acting credits include "O," "State and Main" and the three "Bourne" films has been recently concentrating her attentions on "Raving," a short film she directed starring Zooey Deschanel and Bill Irwin. "Raving" will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will air on the Sundance Channel in May.
