Star-studded wedding goes off in Italy
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes -- perhaps you've heard a thing or two about their impending nuptials -- did indeed exchange vows Saturday in Bracciano, Italy, northwest of Rome. Multiple media outlets reported confirmation of the ceremony by the couple's rep, Arnold Robinson, a little before 2 p.m. ET (8 p.m. local time).
The ceremony at Castle Odescalchi, which dates to the 15th century, concluded a weeklong build-up in Italy and seemingly endless months of chatter about the couple's impending nuptials. It's the first marriage for the 27-year-old Holmes and the third for Cruise, 44, who was previously hitched to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.
The new Mr. and Mrs. Cruise have a 7-month-old daughter, Suri.
A phalanx of media crews has been camped out in Rome and Bracciano, a small town on the shores of a Lake Bracciano, for several days, breathlessly reporting sightings of the couple, their families and the numerous celebrity guests at the wedding. Bold-face attendees included Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jim Carrey, Jenny McCarthy, David and Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Andrea Bocelli -- who said he would sing the couple a song as a wedding gift.
Also at the wedding were Brooke Shields -- who had a rather public spat with Scientologist Cruise last year over her use of medication to treat postpartum depression -- and her husband, writer Chris Henchy.
Holmes reportedly wore an Armani gown, with her husband also donning the designer's duds for the ceremony.
Cruise and Holmes made their public debut as a couple in April 2005, also in Rome. Speculation about their relationship, which sprang up pretty much out of nowhere, have followed them ever since -- through Cruise's antic couch-jumping on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," their engagement in the summer of 2005, Holmes' pregnancy and the April birth of Suri, up to the frenzy surrounding Saturday's nuptials.
