Walken's Dancin' to 'Hairspray'
Oscar-winner will play Travolta's husband in big screen musical
According to Variety, Walken has now been signed on to play Wilbur Turnblad in the Adam Shankman-directed adaptation of the Broadway play based on the John Waters movie.
Then again, it was a little over a week ago that Variety reported that that same part would go to Broadbent. Apparently not.
"Chris was the person [composer Scott Wittman] and I wanted in the first place, and this is a happy ending to this particular saga," Shankman tells the trade paper, offering no insight as to what caused Broadbent's exit from the film or whether or not the "Iris" co-star had even been officially signed in the first place.
Production on "Hairspray" will begin in September in Toronto, with the studio aiming for a summer 2007 release. The film co-stars John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Zac Efron and newcomer Nikki Blonsky.
Most recently seen in "Wedding Crashers," Walken's upcoming slate includes "Man of the Year" and the pingpong comedy "Balls of Fury." The song-and-dance veteran and "Dear Hunter" co-star strutted his musical stuff in "Pennies From Heaven."
