James Dean: Sept. 30, 1955
Pop culture passing: The "Rebel Without a Cause" star and his mechanic were driving a Porsche 550 Spyder to a sports car race in Salinas, Calif. Another driver coming from the other direction hit them head-on and the actor died before officials could get him to the hospital.
State of unrest: Dean was laid to rest at Park Cemetery in Fairmount, Ind., far from the Hollywood fanfare. Of course, that didn't stop his admirers from traveling to and vandalizing his grave. His headstone was stolen twice and had to be replaced. The new stone was then stolen and found on the side of a highway. Authorities have done their best to secure the new marker, but fans have continued to chip away at it, hoping to take just a small token with them.
