In 1947 Chicago, Polish emigre and bar owner Leonard Chess hires a blues combo that includes guitar prodigy Muddy Waters and harmonica player Little Walter . His success with Waters and Walter leads to a growing stable of musical stars, including Etta James, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry, but inevitable the line between business and personal blurs as the often turbulent lives of these music stars play out.
