TV's Underrated stars of 2009: Zap2it's Year in Review

Yvette Nicole Brown, 'Community'

You know her as: Shirley Bennett, the mother hen of the Greendale Community College Spanish study group

Why we like her: Brown's lighthearted cheeriness -- guiding Britta (Gillian Jacobs) how to properly "girl talk" or gossiping about tiny nipples with Jeff (Joel McHale) -- only thinly veils the rather maniacal loose cannon inside Shirley, who's been done wrong by her man and is entering higher education for the first time later in life. Brown's particular brand of homey stealth wackiness is welcoming and startling all at once.

Where else you've seen her: As Helen the movie theater manager on "Drake & Josh," on "That's So Raven" and "Malcolm in the Middle" and in numerous commercials, including ones for DiGiorno pizza, Yoplait, Shout and Pine-Sol.
