Cop shows have been around almost as long as television has. Literally hundreds of them have come and gone over the years. And while nearly all of them share at least one thing -- the satisfaction of putting away the bad guys -- it's a canvas broad enough to allow for all types of characters, from brilliant loners to wet-behind-the-ears rookies to bad guys with badges.
Two new cop shows -- ABC's "The Unusuals"
(starring Amber Tamblyn
) and NBC's "Southland"
-- premiere this week, and they fit a couple of the archetypes we've seen in the past. With that in mind, we thought we'd examine some of the major types of series that fall under the genre.
