Davis took over and cleaned up a Miami program in disarray after crippling NCAA sanctions. He was 51-20 in seven seasons, capped by an 11-1 finish and No. 2 ranking in 2000. That led him to the NFL's Cleveland Browns, where he was 24-35 before resigning in 2004. North Carolina brought him back to the NCAA ranks in 2007, and things seemed to be looking up until a brewing scandal involving player dealings with an agent stalled the upward momentum and led to an NCAA investigation.
