The Danish director's attempt at humor backfired while at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Answering questions for his film "Melancholia" Von Trier joked with reporters that he was a Nazi and that he was glad he was not of Jewish heritage, as he once hoped he might be. "What can I say?," he said. "I understand Hitler, but I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely. But I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. ...
