Lars Von Trier: 'I understand Hitler'
The Danish director's attempt at humor backfired while at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Answering questions for his film "Melancholia" Von Trier joked with reporters that he was a Nazi and that he was glad he was not of Jewish heritage, as he once hoped he might be. "What can I say?," he said. "I understand Hitler,
but I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely. But I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. ... He's not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him, and I sympathize with him a little bit." Above, Von Trier with "Melancholia" star Kirsten Dunst.
