HBO's addictive vampire drama was always gleefully ready to indulge in sex and violence, but it took things to a new level this season when vampire king Russell reacted to the death of his lover by ripping out a TV anchor's spine on live television, then calmly declaring war on humanity. It's amazing the show still manages to come up with such visceral shocks.
