Canadian soccer star Christine Sinclair and team coach Jon Herdman have both voiced their displeasure with the ref in the U.S./Canada semifinal calling a rare penalty of time-wasting on the Canadian goalkeeper, which led to a free kick. Then on the free kick, one of the Canadian players was struck in the arm by the ball when she could not get out of the way, which is a handball. A handball in the penalty area means a penalty kick, which Abby Wambach buried to tie the score 3-3.
The Canadians feel the game was taken away from them by the referee calling the rare penalty that eventually led to the goal. There has now been some speculation of suspensions for the bronze medal match for the people who have publicly complained about the refs. FIFA says in a statement, "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee is currently analysing incidents that occurred after the conclusion of the match. Further information will be provided only after the Committee are in possession of all the elements of the case."
