'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'
Emily Rose didn't exist -- but Anneliese Michel did. She was a German woman who became convinced she was possessed by the devil, not suffering from epilepsy and depression. Her family and two priests attempted to help her with a series of exorcism rituals over the space of about 10 months -- and they withdrew all medical treatment while they did so. She died of dehydration and starvation in 1976. The 23-year-old weighed only 68 pounds when she died. As in the movie, her parents and the exorcists did face trial and were found guilty of negligent homicide -- and as in the movie, they received suspended sentences for the crime.
