Super Bowl 2004

Super Bowl XXXVIII -- 2004

The Team: Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, P. Diddy, Kid Rock, Nelly

The Playbook: Two of the world's biggest pop stars -- Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake -- would pair up for a raunchy, MTV-produced halftime show, bringing some edge and hipness to the 2004 football party. The event would launch, full-throttle, the marketing campaign for Jackson's upcoming "Damita Jo," whose duet with Timberlake would be the highlight of a show opened by reality TV star-of-the-moment Jessica Simpson. But does anyone remember that anyone besides Timberlake and Jackson performed? At the end of Timberlake's "Rock Your Body," Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson's clothing -- and such unforgettable pop-culture phrases as "wardrobe malfunction" and "nipplegate" were born.

The result: interception, touchdown, flag on the play, no score. The moment launched a major FCC campaign and resulted in large fines, and the fallout forced broadcast companies to reevaluate or modify their content. But it¿s unlikely there will ever be another halftime show that will inspire this much talk and debate.
