Super Bowl XXXVI -- 2002

The team: U2

Playbook: The New England Patriots narrowly beat the St. Louis Rams, winning with a field goal as time ran out, 20-17. Coming just months after the Sept. 11 attacks, the halftime show took an exceptionally patriotic theme. Rock band U2 played “Where the Streets Have No Name” with the names of 9/11 victims scrolling down a large screen. Emotions ran high as Bono ran around the stage and, at the end of the song, revealed an American flag in the lining of his jacket.

Result: touchdown. Poignant, stirring and heartfelt, U2 delivered just the right mix of solemn yet celebratory performance that was needed after 9/11.
