Drawn-out mystery arcs with no resolution ('The Killing,' 'How I Met Your Mother')

There's only so much patience you can demand from a TV viewer, which is why audiences were so outraged when they sat through a plodding season full of red herrings only to get no resolution whatsoever in Rosie Larsen's murder case. Thirteen episodes and we still have zero idea who committed the titular murder in "The Killing." Showrunner Veena Sud has promised that she'll reveal the killer in Season 2, but for many fans, that might be too late. In the case of "How I Met Your Mother," the mother storyline has become so secondary to what the show's about nowadays that we've almost forgotten we're supposed to be waiting for that reveal in the first place. We've waited so long, though, that we wonder if anyone will actually care when they do tell us.
