We loved him because: With Tyler and Hayley's help, Chris broke the sire bond to Klaus -- so he was able to help Stefan get to Elena by disobeying Klaus's rule. Let's just say the Mystic Falls gang wasn't exactly appreciative of his efforts.
We lost him because: Stefan and Caroline conspired for Jeremy to kill Chris to start his hunters' mark and relieve Elena of her curse. Honestly, they were all pretty awful about it, since Chris had just helped them. Tyler and Hayley were the only ones who were sufficiently appalled by the situation.
