We loved her because: She was responsible for the creation of vampires in the first place, even though she majorly regretted it later and spent her life and afterlife fighting to eliminate the vampire race from the world.
We lost her because: The first time she died, Esther was murdered by her son, Klaus, who felt she had betrayed him. He ripped out her heart, and the violence of her death marked the spot in Mystic Falls for eternity. Later, she died again because she'd messed with Alaric's head one too many times -- in his final heroic act as a human, he staked her before she could kill Matt and Jeremy.
