John Gilbert (David Anders)
We loved him because: Honestly? We didn't. Uncle John was Elena's biological dad, but he was a total jerk most of the time. He killed Anna, hassled Alaric and Jenna, and generally failed in the role-model department because he was too obsessed with killing off vampires to, you know, support his daughter.
We lost him because: Interestingly enough, John's first act as a good parent would also be his last. Sure, he fought to keep Elena safe for a while, but there's something in the water in Mystic Falls that makes that every single person's No. 1 priority, so we're not giving him too much credit in that department. When he literally gave his life for hers, though, we had to admit that he was acting downright parental. Plus, the letter he wrote Elena just before he bit the bullet made us cry, and cry, and cry. "It's no easy task being an ordinary parent to an extraordinary child." Excuse us, we have to go cry more.
