Golden Globes Toast Mobsters and 'Dreamgirls'
Hollywood Foreign Press also welcomes 'Ugly Betty' and 'Heroes'
In the best dramatic picture category, "Babel" and "The Departed" will face off against Emilio Estevez's "Bobby," Stephen Frears' "The Queen" and Todd Field's "Little Children."
"Dreamgirls" will face competition in the musical-comedy best picture race from "Little Miss Sunshine," "Thank You For Smoking" and the blockbusters "Borat" and "The Devil Wears Prada."
On the television side, the Globes made room for several new shows, including NBC's "Heroes" and ABC's "Ugly Betty."
"Heroes" will battle on the drama series front with "24," "Big Love," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lost," while the comedy series competition for "Ugly Betty" includes "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "The Office" and "Weeds."
For the actors, being nominated was so nice that everybody wanted to do it twice. Actually, in the case of Helen Mirren -- nominated for "The Queen," "Elizabeth I" and "Prime Suspect: The Final Act" -- thrice was nice. The only multiple nominee on the film side was Leonardo DiCaprio, whose "Blood Diamond" performance will go head-to-head with his work in "The Departed." Splitting nominations between film and television were Emily Blunt ("The Devil Wears Prada" and "Gideon's Daughter"), Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine" and "Tsunami, The Aftermath") and Chiwetel Ejiofor ("Kinky Boots," "Tsunami, The Aftermath").
Also snagging two nominations was director Clint Eastwood, whose work on "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima" will go against Frears, Scorsese and Inarritu.
That means that Eastwood goes into the directing category despite the fact that neither of his films was nominated in the best picture category -- "Flags" was snubbed, while the Japanese-language "Iwo Jima" is in the foreign film category against "The Lives of Others," "Pan's Labyrinth," "Volver" and, perhaps most intriguingly, Mel Gibson's polarizing "Apocalypto."
The Golden Globes will be presented on Monday, Jan. 15 on NBC.
