Sources: Public Michael Jackson memorial Tuesday
Fans can pay their respects in downtown L.A.
LOS ANGELES -- Police sources tell KTLA-TV that they're making preparations for a massive public memorial for Michael Jackson Tuesday morning at Staples Center.Officials are said to be holding closed-door talks about the possible event.
Officers Wednesday night closed Chick Hearn Court -- the street that runs in front of the downtown arena-- apparently in anticipation of early crowds that could line up for a Jackson service.
Earlier in the day, members of Jackson's family met with officials from the Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol about funeral services.
Plans to use Jackson's former Neverland Ranch near Santa Barbara for a memorial apparently fell through.
The possible event at Staples Center is stirring criticism over how much such an event would cost the city.
Sources say the LAPD has plans for a massive deployment Tuesday in preparation for a funeral service. The family has yet to confirm any finalized memorial plans. A spokesperson for Jackson's family replied, "no comment," when asked about the service at Staples Center.
News crews descended on Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, fueled by rumors that the pop star's body could be stored there.
Cemetery officials denied the rumors.
Jackson specified no plans for a funeral or wishes for his remains in his 2002 last will, filed in a Los Angeles court Wednesday.
His brother, Jermaine Jackson, said Thursday that he would like to see Neverland Ranch as his brother's final resting place. However, it's believed permits for a burial at the sprawling estate in Santa Barbara County could not be arranged in time.
Authorities had said a memorial at Neverland posed safety concerns, saying that the narrow hillside road that leads to the ranch could be overtaxed by thousands of vehicles.
At once a symbol of Jackson's success and excesses, Neverland became the site of a makeshift memorial after his June 25 death. Scores of fans have streamed past the gated entrance to leave handwritten notes, photographs, balloons and flowers.
