Actor apprehended by Malibu police

Maybe Mel Gibson drank a lot of water and then it turned to wine in his veins.

The "Passion of the Christ" filmmaker and Oscar winner was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence, reports TMZ.com.

Gibson, 50, was tooling along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, Calif. around 2:36 a.m. when he was arrested for DUI and then booked by the Lost Hills sheriff's station. Bail was set at $5,000.

"Right now, it's an ongoing investigation," says Steve Whitmore of the sheriff's department. "As we would do with anyone, we don't want to release any more since the information is fragmentary."

There has been no statement from his rep yet. Gibson has had a previous DUI arrest in 1984, but went to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the early 1990s to deal with his problem.

The filmmaker won the best picture and best director Oscars for 1995's "Braveheart." His other screen credits include the "Mad Max" and "Lethal Weapon" films, "Maverick," "Ransom," "Payback," "What Women Want," Signs" and the controversial "The Passion of the Christ."

His next film, "Apocalypto," is an adventure story set 500 years in the past and will be presented in one of the ancient Mayan dialects. The film, about a young man who flees the kingdom when he's chosen to be a human sacrifice, will be released in December.
