It's a girl for Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

LOS ANGELES -- The media blitz for Tom Cruise's movie "Mission: Impossible: III" hasn't even begun, but the man who rode his whirlwind relationship with young actress Katie Holmes all last summer has a new talking point: the couple's new baby.

Holmes gave birth a 7 lb 7 oz girl named Suri, on Tuesday (April 18) in Los Angeles, according to the couple's publicist. This is Holmes' first child. Cruise has a daughter -- Isabella, 13 -- and son -- Connor, 11 -- that he adopted with his second wife, actress Nicole Kidman.

While its unknown if the name has any meaning to the couple personally, it's Hebrew for "princess" and Persian for "red rose."

Cruise and Holmes met last summer and the media chronicled every move as they publicized their respective opening movies. While in Paris during the European leg of his "War of the World" press duties, Cruise popped the question to Holmes on the top of the Eiffel Tower. The happy couple announced their engagement the next morning at a press conference.

News soon followed that Holmes was pregnant, along with rumors of displeasure from her Catholic family. More column inches were spent on whether it was medically a good idea for Cruise to have bought an ultrasound machine for at-home use and what exactly the Church of Scientology's (of which Cruise is a member and Holmes is converting) "silent birth" practices entail.

Coincidentally, Brooke Shields also gave birth to a 7-pound daughter named Greer on Tuesday as well. And, according to "Access Hollywood" both Shields and Holmes were on the same floor of the same hospital for their labor.

Shields, who appeared with Cruise in 1981's "Endless Love," found herself in a public feud with the actor last summer when he criticized her for using Paxil to recover from postpartum depression following the birth of her first child.

The taking of antidepressant medication goes against Scientology which claims there is "no science behind" chemical imbalances.
